When I first arrived in Canada, everything felt uncertain.
I had left behind everything familiar – my career network, my support system – to start a new life in a place I had never been. I came with hope, but also with a deep sense of vulnerability. I didn’t know anyone. I had no job prospects, no insider knowledge of the local job market, and no one to help me figure out where to even begin. What I did have, though, was a quiet determination to grow. I knew I wanted more than just to survive; I wanted to thrive. I wanted to find my community, contribute to something meaningful, and advance my career in this new environment.
Starting My Life Again in Canada Felt Lonely
There’s a particular kind of loneliness that comes with starting from scratch. Some days, I felt like I was shouting into a void – sending out resumes, trying to make connections, seeking out opportunities – and getting silence in return. I wanted more than just a job. I wanted to regain my professional identity and find my footing in a completely new environment. But I didn’t know how.
So I started searching for opportunities, for community, for connection. That’s when I stumbled upon a LinkedIn post calling for applications for the Professional Women’s Group (now Working Women’s Group) by Dress for Success Vancouver. Something about it caught my attention. Maybe it was the phrase “Professional Women” – a reminder of who I had been and still hoped to be. Maybe it was the word “Group” – suggesting connection, support, community. It wasn’t just about clothing or career tips; it felt like an invitation to be part of a network of women who support one another. Women who, like me, were striving, growing, and evolving.
I applied, and to my delight, I was accepted.
The Working Women’s Group Gave Me Back Community
From the very first session, I knew I had made the right decision. The Professional Women’s Group wasn’t just about professional development, it was about belonging. There was no need to explain myself, to justify my presence. It was a space filled with empathy and ambition – a rare and beautiful combination. I met women from all walks of life, each with her own journey, challenges, and victories. We shared stories, learned from one another, and created a space that was equal parts safe and empowering.
One of the standout moments of my journey was attending a TD workshop event. The panelists were accomplished and successful, yet so down-to-earth. They weren’t just successful — they were relatable. They spoke candidly about their journeys, their challenges, and the importance of taking chances on yourself. They didn’t sugarcoat their experiences, and in doing so, they gave me permission to believe that success could be mine too – even if the path didn’t look like anyone else’s.
They encouraged us to apply for roles, even if we didn’t feel “ready” yet. That message stuck with me. So I took a leap of faith, submitted an application — and today, I am proud to say that I’m working with the most incredible team at TD Bank. An incredible team of people who support, challenge, and inspire me. Being part of this team has reinforced that I bring value. That moment of encouragement at the event was more than just good advice, it was a seed that bloomed into a new chapter of my career.
My Mentorship has Shaped My Path Forward
Another unexpected gift from this Dress for Success Vancouver journey has been meeting my mentor through the Professional Women’s Group. Charisma Reilly is a phenomenal woman whose brilliance, insight, generosity, and guidance have helped shape my path. She challenges me, cheers for me, and opens my eyes to possibilities I hadn’t even considered. Every conversation with her leaves me more confident, more prepared, and more inspired. She encourages me to dream bigger, plan smarter, and take bolder steps. I often hear her say, “Ade, you’ve got this!” when I’m in doubt or when I hesitate. And honestly, I do. Having someone in your corner who sees your potential and is willing to guide you is priceless. Charisma has been that person for me, and I hope to be that for someone else in the future.
Looking back, I can honestly say that Dress for Success has changed the trajectory of my Canadian journey. It gave me more than professional guidance – it gave me a sisterhood and a sense of place. The impact of Dress for Success didn’t stop at a job offer. It’s made me more grounded and connected. Because as I grow, I notice the effect of showing up in small but meaningful ways. I now find myself reaching out to others – newcomers, younger professionals, friends – going through transitions, sharing what I’ve learned, and encouraging them to keep going.
Dress For Success Helps Women Navigate Change
Dress for Success Vancouver is more than just an organization I engaged with, it’s now woven into the fabric of my Canadian experience. It’s a part of the story I will carry with me wherever I go. And as I look forward, I carry memories of what I’ve gained, and a deep commitment to give back. To be for someone else what this program has been for me: a signpost, a support, a starting point.
To any woman out there navigating change, stepping into the unknown, or feeling uncertain of her next step – I want to say this: You are not alone. The journey may be long, but it doesn’t have to be lonely. Sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity, one community, one “yes” to begin a whole new chapter.
