Uma’s Story

The cold February air nipped at my cheeks as I stepped onto Canadian soil with my two little ones, my 11-month-old bundle of joy clutched in my arms and my wide-eyed 4-year-old clinging to my side. After years of separation, we were finally reunited with my husband, ready to start a new chapter.

But as the initial excitement settled, reality hit hard: a new country, a freezing climate, and two toddlers adjusting to a world so different from what they knew. Every day was a battle, balancing motherhood, household responsibilities, and the overwhelming pressure to rebuild my career in a foreign land.

Starting a New Life in Canada With Two Young Kids

The first few months were a relentless storm of diaper changes, sleepless nights, and soothing homesick tears, both mine and my children’s. My heart ached as I watched my eldest struggle to adapt, missing the warmth of home, while my youngest fought off the unfamiliar cold. But I refused to let despair win. I reminded myself every day: This is temporary. We will thrive.

By September, a turning point arrived, my children started school and daycare. For the first time in months, I had a moment to breathe, to think about me, about the career I had left behind. With six years of IT experience back home, I knew I had the skills, but the Canadian job market felt distant and difficult to navigate. Where does someone like me even start?

She Didn’t Just Hand Me a Suit; She Helped Me Find Confidence

That’s when I was introduced to Dress for Success Vancouver through the ISSofBC Career Path Program. My first visit as a client was transformative. Walking into their doors, I was nervous, unsure of what to expect. But my stylist greeted me with warmth, listening to my story, understanding my fears. She didn’t just hand me a suit; she helped me find confidence. The blazer hugged my shoulders perfectly, the pants fit just right. For the first time since arriving in Canada, I saw myself, not just a struggling newcomer, but a professional ready to reclaim career.

Dress for Success Vancouver gave me more than just clothing, it gave me purpose. Inspired by their mission of empowering women, I applied to volunteer. From April onward, I dedicated my time to helping other women like me, organizing donations, assisting with styling sessions, and witnessing firsthand the incredible impact of a supportive community.

Volunteering Gave Me Connections, Experience, and Purpose

Despite my experience, job hunting felt like riding an emotional rollercoaster. Rejections piled up, and self-doubt crept in. But I refused to stay down. I attended networking events, polished my resume, and absorbed every bit of Canadian workplace culture I could. My volunteer role at Dress for Success wasn’t just giving back, it was gaining Canadian experience, connections, and the reassurance that I was on the right path.

Then came the interview. As I slipped into my Dress for Success suit that morning, I stood a little taller. The fabric wasn’t just material, it was armor. With every step, I felt it: this was more than clothing, it was courage woven into every thread. I walked into that interview room not as an outsider, but as a professional who belonged.

And then the call. The words I had been waiting for: “We would like to offer you the position.”

Tears streamed down my face as I hugged my children, my husband cheering beside me. And to my Parents, thank you for being my strength when I felt weak. I did it. After months of struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering determination, I had landed my first job as a Test Engineer at HCL Canada, a role in my field, in my domain.

Dress For Success Reminded Me Of My Worth

Today, as I reflect on this journey, my heart swells with gratitude. To Dress for Success Vancouver, thank you for dressing me in confidence, for reminding me of my worth, for being the stepping stone to my success. And to every woman out there fighting for her dreams, keep going.

This is not just my success story, it’s proof that with courage, community, and unshakable determination, no dream is too far out of reach.

And this? This is only the beginning.
